I do not allow my children to just play any games on the computer or other electronic devices. I encourage their screen time to be educational. I was thrilled to be asked to review Reading Eggs. Reading Eggs is an Online Learn to Read program for children from ages 3 to 14. Obviously the older the child they are just reinforcing and developing readers.
Blurb from Reading Eggs: Children love the more than 1,000 activities, games, songs, golden eggs and other rewards which, along with feeling proud of their reading, really motivate children to keep exploring and learning with Reading Eggs. The Reading Eggspress community is geared for older children (7-13) to encourage fluent reading via the more than 1,000 books in the e-library and the ability to compete with children around the world.
Statistics show that elementary aged children can loose up to 2 1/2 months of learning over the summer. I don’t know about your children but anytime they are allowed to get computer time they are totally focused on what they are doing. So when I want to sneak in some educational time I have been letting my 6 year old log onto Reading Eggs to spend 20 minutes “playing the games”.
He is definitely a beginner reader so this review is great for him. He opted out of the “testing” when you first sign up so he is at the beginning learning letter sounds which is a bit repetitive from school but since we are not in school the timing could not be better.
The website has a variety of games within each letter and it also helps with their mouse technique. I wish we had this last summer to get a jump start on reading.
At least at my 6 year old level, the kids earn points to move onto the next level and that is very exciting for him. He was just laughing today and asked me to come meet one of the characters who he thought was “hysterical”.
While I am a true believer of one on one time with each child, let’s face it we don’t live in a perfect world. I think Reading Eggs is a great supplement for either summer teaching or preschool/early readers to get some extra encouragement about reading.
This is not a free website as you must purchase a subscription. HOWEVER, they offer a 14 day trail period which I think is so generous. Once your kids start playing they won’t even realize they are there to learn. While I have not had a chance to check out the sections for the older children I am sure they will be fun but not as dynamic as other online gaming sites.
So what perfect timing to sign up your children for a little summer enrichment with Reading Eggs.
I was given a 3 month subscription in exchange for this review. I was not given any further compensation and all the opinions are my own and those expressed by my 6 year old testing this product!
