When I saw this recipe in Family Fun for King Cake I could not resist trying it. The ones at the grocery are over $8 and how much could yeast and flour cost!! Also my husband sent me a link for a cake that was sent to his office by the parents of one of his co-workers from New Orleans and it was over $30 a cake.
I found the little babies at the craft store near the Baby/wedding shower supplies.
Well I set out one weekend afternoon, you will need a good chunk of time to do this.
Made my dough using my dough hook and Kitchen Aide Machine.
After rising the appropriate time, rolled the mixture inside.
Here is the inside. It was pretty tough, not pastry like.
Kids still enjoyed it. Best when heated in microwave a few seconds.

Girl it rocks! Stop over and link it up!

As for it being tough, sometimes if the dough is over-mixed it will be tough and dry. Just mix it until combined. Sometimes the cake is dry, even the ones in New Orleans. Another reason is that you might have used too much cinnamon. That dries it out, too!
Don’t give up! Susie
WOW! I have eaten a delicous King cake before but would never attempt it. But you made it look easy and yummy. Great job and I love the header of your blog BTW!

I’m very impressed you tried it! It looks great! My mother always tried new cakes and breads for the different holidays and I always loved it. I have not attempted it yet, but I just might have to! Thanks for a fun post! I just found you on voiceBoks and am so glad I did. I’m now following!
