As you can see from the illustrations above, these books are geared toward boys and girls ages 4-8 years old with underwater characters that will appeal to the youngest ages. Phyllis Cafaro is the author and founder of Captain McFinn and Friends series. This book series comes with stickers, sing along audio CD and mobile apps to engage the children.
Captain McFinn, a friendly black tip shark, was once a bully himself. During the first book, the Legend of Captain McFinn and Friends, you see how even the meanest kid, or fish, can turn into one of the protectors of others.
You can find the entire Captain McFinn & Friends Series online at Www.captainmcfinn.com or major retailers such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon for as little as $9.99 for soft cover books.
If your kids enjoy this series, think about bringing the bully books to the school counselors attention. This author has recently introduced the S.H.A.R.K. Patrol program, an anti-bullying educational program for teachers to hep educate K-3 students. I recently gave my copies to our school counselor and curious to her thoughts. Will update this post when I receive any feedback.
I received these books to review but not provided with any other compensation. The opinions expressed on this blog are 100% my own.

bullying has to be addressed, at home, in schools, clubs etc. It has gotten so outta hand, and many parents just do not pay attention. These books are a great start!
I think its great to start at four, and even younger to teach that bullying is wrong. Children don’t bully because it’s in their nature, they bully because they see and learn it. This is excellent.
As a mother with “small” children in school; I think this may be something I need to purchase not only for the kids to read, but the school as well. We have ran into a few bullying issues this past year, nothing major and it was taken care of once I went up to the school. But I believe that the teachers and counselors should all be better prepared with how to deal with bullying. Thank you for the honest review, I can’t wait to hear what your school’s counselor thinks of the books.
Children have been proven to show aggressive actions and words even in kindergarten and pre-school. I think this could be a great way to teach children about bullying and how it can hurt. Not only that these books would be the stepping stone to a very important conversation.
What a positive way to encourage kids to talk about bullying. Thanks for sharing!
What a great idea! Kids are showing aggressive tendencies earlier and earlier, teaching to be a buddy and not a bully is prefect for getting them started on the right foot!
Looks like these are a great resource for schools and other children’s groups. Bullying needs to be talked about and addressed and books like these make kids feel open about discussing bullying. Good for you for recommending them to the school counselor!
I’ve been out of the loop on children’s books for a while since I’m adult and don’t have my own kids. But I worked as a nanny last year and got to know a lot of current children’s books. These look like a good addition to any kid’s library or, like you noted, a school counselor’s office!
