I do not consider myself a dumpster diver, but I was taking the dog for a walk a couple of weeks ago and saw a large gold frame in a friend’s garbage pile. I immediately called my friend and asked if the frame was in one piece and thought I could Repurpose Picture Frames into Jewelry Cork boards.
She said I was welcome to take the frame, now the creativity mice were turning in my brain. What have people repurposed frames into? Let’s learn how to Repurpose Picture Frames into Cork is boards.
OF course, we love to repurpose wine corks too which would work for a smaller frame.
DIY CORK BOARD
HOW TO REPURPOSE A PICTURE FRAME INTO A CORK BOARD
As you can see this was large picture frame, 24 x 30 to be exact. It did not have a back but hoped I could repurpose an old frame into a cork board for my daughter’s room.
I headed to the hardware store to look for large sheets of cork or ceiling tiles. (I was not sure if I wanted to use cork or fabric for this project. All they had were cork tiles that were too small for this project
What you need to make Cork Board Frames
- Old Wooden Frame
- Spray Paint
- Cork Board sheets
- Card Board
- Staple Gun
NO luck finding either item. So I decided to hit AC Moore and I found rolled cork there in a size perfect for this project.
Since I did not have a back for the frame, I decided to use another resource in my house, cardboard. Yes all the review boxes here leave us with a surplus of cardboard.
I had my daughter measure the inside of the frame and cut out a piece of cardboard in that size. I decided to make it a little more sturdy by using two pieces of cardboard.
HOW TO ADD CORK BOARD TO A FRAME
When I started unrolling the cork, it cracked and ripped at each turn. This is not going well. I immediately emailed Megabrands America, the owner of CorkDudes.
Their customer service was great and after sharing my photos of the cork, I immediately sent me another roll of cork.
Using tacky glue or even better wood glue, adhere the cork to the piece of cardboard. It is still fragile but not nearly as bad as the first roll.
I turned my cardboard/ cork piece over and laid heavy items on top to help flatten the project while it dried.
WHEN SHOULD I PAINT THE FRAME OF A CORK BOARD?
Meanwhile, I decided to spray paint the gold frame white. Pretty self-explanatory.
Hopefully, you cut the board out to the correct size and you can now easily slide this into the frame. Not the case here so I needed to cut it, not the best thing to do. I should have measured it at the beginning.
WHAT SHOULD I USE TO ATTACH THE CORK TO BACK OF A PICTURE FRAME?
I used a staple gun to attach the cardboard onto the frame.
Attach the correct picture hanger hardware and you now have an inexpensive and DIY Cord Board made from a repurposed frame.
What is your favorite thing you have repurposed? What have you done with a repurposed Frame?

Use large push pins to hang up bracelets and necklaces.
