Summer must be coming as I am craving flavors like root beer floats. I thought I would try to make one of those ever-popular extreme milkshakes, in this case, root beer floats. You know the ones, glasses covered in chocolate and topped with the frozen drink and cake or cookies piled so high.
Root Beer Float Cupcake Recipes
First thing first, you need to make the cupcakes first to make these ultimate floats. This Root Beer Cupcake recipe could not be any simpler starting out with a white cake box mix. I
If you have been following me for any time you know that I don’t mind using starter mixes to make things move a little quicker. Plus using a box mix I know I will be making about 24 cupcakes a time. No worries, just freeze any extra if you don’t need them all.
I just added 3 tablespoons of root beer extract to the regular recipe. I kept tasting the batter and did not get the true flavor of the root beer. Depending on your family’s tastes you may want to adjust the flavorings. Proceed with the cupcake recipe stated on the box and allow them to cool completely before frosting!
The frosting is what really made this cupcake recipe explode. It was especially amazing cold. With the warm temperatures, I would suggest keeping these in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
Of course, we could not resist adding a cut paper straw and a cherry on top.

Pick the best root beer:
A&W Root Beer helps create the perfect timeless family night treat: an A&W Root Beer Float! Make sure it is nice and cold so chill it all day or better overnight.
Real Vanilla Ice Cream
There is real vanilla in A&W, so why skimp on the ice cream. Buy the best vanilla ice cream you can. This means finding one that uses real vanilla beans, no artificial flavoring here.
Build The Float Glass
Place your glasses in the freezer for at least 1 hour to get nice and cold. Then use the Ice cream Shell Topping that hardens. You know what I am talking about. Carefully pour this on the outside of the cold glass
Add sprinkles to the shell before it has a chance to harden.
Make Your Root Beer Float
- Add several scoops of vanilla ice cream to your glass
- Slowly pour your cold root beer over the ice cream. Allow the fizz to subside than add more.
- Top with a Root Beer Float Cupcake
- SERVE and Enjoy
